4/30/2018 – Safeway Route.
Lots of bits of trash, but nothing major. Found a coat with two flashlights and a bicycle pump. Assumed it belonged to a bicycle rider and left it hanging on a sign. Also, I was flagged down by a motorist. She got out of her car and said she was a preschool teacher and her class made some thank-you drawings for us. She also gave us a Starbucks gift card. This is probably the nicest thank-you we have had.
5/1/2018 – Park and Ride Route.
Very light day. Found a penny (whoopie). Walked an extra distance down 100th to Simonds Road to collect trash. Got a honk from Mr. Handyman and lots of waves. Didn’t fling anything today. This breaks a streak of 6 days in a row.
5/2/2018 – Safeway Route.
Found a baseball across the street from Cedar Park and tossed it back. Janet flung a rabbit. A first. Found a Nissan hub cap and hauled it back to recycle. Got a honk from Mr. Handyman and waved to MM Mechanical at the 7-11 intersection. Curt stopped to chat with us at the top of the hill. He likes to check out what we have collected. I asked if he was interested in a Nissan hubcap, but he has a Toyota.
Today’s take: A couple of notes, a run-over pocket knife and three cents.
Also found Bubbles to go with Nemo we found a year or so ago.
5/3/2018 – Park and Ride Route.
Light traffic, light trash. Harvested another sign and found another hubcap, Subaru this time. Went past the park and ride bus stop and the people waiting for the bus artfully ignored the weirdo.
5/4/2018 – Safeway Route.
Lots of miscellaneous trash and an eventful walk. Flung bits and pieces of a disassembled rabbit including a lucky rabbit’s foot. Not lucky for the rabbit, of course. Got a honk from Mr. Handyman and a wave from MM Mechanical. Had a man in a pickup truck stop along Juanita-Woodinville Way to thank us for what we were doing and a woman parking in the Safeway parking lot thank us from across the street. We also heard a long honk from another car, but Janet said it was not OUR kind of honk. I haven’t learned to read honks yet.
Also, underwear #14. Fruit of the Loom for those of you keeping score.
For the third day in a row, I found a hubcap, this one did not have a brand.
I gave Janet a half-inflated “I Love You” balloon.
She gutted it and put it in her garbage bag.
Also, If you are going to litter, don’t put your name on the evidence, Patrick Blomgren.
We caused a brief traffic jam on top of Norway Hill. Curt, who stopped to chat earlier this week drove by followed by a school bus. I held up the hubcap I found, and he stopped. Blocking the bus. At the same time, another car came from the opposite direction and stopped to talk to Janet. Janet told Curt he was blocking the bus and he continued on allowing the bus to pass.
Meanwhile, the other man in the other car spoke with Janet for a few seconds and moved on. He thanked me as he passed.
5/5/2018 – Riverside Drive.
It was very light when we started out and found a normal amount of trash. We walked down to the Bothell Bridge, but there was too much traffic to cross it other than by the pedestrian way. Found a discarded needle there. Under the freeways, old stuff keeps surfacing and there is always new stuff from above. Found yet another hubcap, this time a moon cap, very bent.
After the freeways, we always find large wine bottles, new and old. There are more in that area, but difficult to get to.
Our goal is to eventually make it down to the Bothell City Limits. We go a little farther each week, but by the apartments the area is a mess, so slow going. This morning, we were surprised to see that it was relatively clean.
On the way back, we found another pair of underwear under the freeway.
These were not part of the serial Drawer-Dropper’s work. Not the same M.O.
The Lime Bike we rescued has still not moved. Week 5.
Preparing to fling some road kill.
Baby steps.
