Roadkill Glove

Monday, December 11th, 2023 – Safeway

This morning was dry and warm at 47°F (8.3°C) which made for a pleasant walk. Last week we didn’t come across any roadkill which we pointed out was rare. Today we removed a rabbit, an opossum, and a white rat. We found two other white rats a couple of weeks ago in this same area across from the KinderCare. Could there be a connection? Perhaps they have a side hustle as RatteCare. If so, they are not very good at it.

We also found some money today.

A whole dime at the Safeway parking lot. A nice start to the week.

From our adventures last week, we heard that there might be two more five-dollar bills near where we found the wallet/clutch last Tuesday, so we decided to take a detour today and head up to the park-and-ride to perform a more-thorough search of the area where we found the wallet, money and then the change on Saturday.

We could have saved our walking time, but we did find a tool.

A lost pair of needle-nose pliers that were rusted shut. We put some WD-40 on them when we got home to see if they will loosen up. But we are not holding our breath, our nose, or our needle nose as if that it will help.

We found some Puffy Fluff Stuff.

It is nine bucks at Walmart which sounds expensive. So, here’s the deal, the orange Puffy Fluff Stuff is missing, so we’ll give you a discount. How does this sound, 75% of nine dollars it $6.75. So, we’ll let you have it for an even five bucks. If it’s a deal, leave the five dollars on Juanita-Woodinville Way and we’ll take the five and leave the Puffy Fluff Stuff. Let us know.

We picked up another broken wheel cover.

Finally, not another Nissan nor a Toyota. German engineering comes through keeping wheel covers attached just a little bit longer than the others.

We picked up a six-ounce fishing weight.

We found it on Amazon for thirty bucks. We feel sorry for the person who lost the weight, it really weighs on our conscience.

We came across a very nice pair of kid’s shoes.

Rebok size 12. They say, “If the shoe fits wear it.” But they didn’t. Obviously, “One size does not fit all.” However, they are probably a good fit for Goodwill.

And speaking of shoes, our current walking shoes have exceeded their limit.

They recommend a 400-mile maximum which we would do too if we were selling shoes. But we set our limit at six-hundred miles, then overrun it before we get the new shoes. Anyway, we now have a nice new shiny pair.

The old shoes are on the bottom and the new recruits are on top.

Tuesday, December 12th, 2023 – Park-and-Ride

Today was rather quiet with nominal trash and little of interest. We removed another roadkill rabbit from the street but found no money.

At the park-and-ride, another urine bottle.

What the heck? You are parked, go behind a tree or something.

We did find a full, unopened bag of potato chips.

With five chips in it.

Wednesday, December 13th, 2023 – Safeway and 100th Ave NE

We got out to an early start this morning. It was cold, but not too uncomfortable. We didn’t come across any roadkill but found some money in the busy intersection by the 7Eleven.

A very beat up quarter, but you can trust us, it is a quarter.

On the road over Norway Hill, someone dumped some stolen mail.

Most of it was the typical Wednesday Safeway, Fred Meyer, etc. weekly flyers with some junk mail, nothing to report to the U.S. Postal Service. Obviously, the thieves robbed several mailboxes and quickly got rid of the stuff they weren’t interested in. They thoughtfully put the bulk of it in a plastic shopping bag. They unthoughtfully tossed more out a few more places up the hill.

Wait, what?

Someone purchases a fifteen-dollar Car Cup Holder Waste Can and then litters the wrappings. What the heck? Oh, right, if you fill it, you need to empty it, good thinking.

Thursday, December 14th, 2023 – 160th to 124th Street

Today was warmer and raining. In Seattle in the winter, you can have one or the other, but not both and sometimes neither. We found no money and no roadkill.

Early in our walk, we found a Garmin watch in very good condition.

We posted it on social media, so maybe someone will respond. It is about a hundred and fifty dollars on Amazon and a discontinued model, so perhaps the person will use this as excuse to upgrade. Chuck would.

We have a Fit-Bit that we found a few years ago that nobody claimed. The problem with these is the updating and reporting is cloud-based through the manufacturer, so you cannot just reregister it. The original owner must unregister it; it is an electronic paper weight. We’ll see.

Along Juanita-Way, we picked up another power-tool battery.

These are a pain. The ones we have taken to be recycled are well-sealed and difficult to take apart. Inside are normally some number of 18650 Lithium Ion batteries soldered in place. When we are done, we get some mediocre batteries, several pieces of plastic and memories of sparks flying. Maybe we’ll just put it back tomorrow.

We know this looks obscene.

But it’s just mostly deflated balloons. But evidently not deflated enough.

As we were arriving home, we spotted a flashing light in the center of the street.

We found one of these before. It’s a rechargeable LED dog collar. We’ll keep our eyes out for a rechargeable dog to give it to.

Friday, December 15th, 2023 – 100th Ave NE

The temperature today was still above normal with no rain. And we found more money.

In the gutter on Juanita-Woodinville Way, we found a shiny penny and at Janet’s favorite drive-thru, a quarter, a dime, and a nickel. However, as she was mining the coins, she lost one of her mining tools down the crevasse. We found the caulking tool a while back and Janet has been using it for her mining. She is now planning a retrieval operation for Monday.

We also found some tools.

Another well-runover circular saw blade. Now that we look at it, it looks like it could be a piece of art. Too late. We recycled it. We also found a pair of clamps. Unfortunately, they had also been runover and well clamped. They also joined the saw blade in the recycle. The saw blade says, “I’m cutting-edge technology!” The clamp replies, “I’m the one who really brings things together.” Well, not anymore.

We found a small poster of Santa.

He’s either saying “Don’t tell anyone about the surprise gift” or “Don’t tell anyone about our little secret.” This Santa does look a little like a pervert.

Another aimless spoon.

Unlike forks, spoons don’t have any sense of direction.

An unopened jar of cherries.

Whoa! Twenty-four bucks on Amazon. It’s a good thing we had a spoon with us.

Saturday, December 16th, 2023 – Riverside Drive

We found more money on our walk today.

It started with a shiny quarter on the sidewalk at the top of Brickyard Road. Then we picked up twelve cents while picking up some trash in the park-and-ride. We don’t mind picking up trash as long as the litterers tip us. Finally on the freeway off-ramp, another dime. Forty-seven cents, not bad for a day’s walk.

We also removed a roadkill rat from the street and thought we found a second roadkill.

But it was only a fur-lined glove.

We came across two large piles dumped along Woodinville Drive.

This first one was down in the bushes. We pulled it all onto the roadside and will notify the City of Bothell. The trash consisted of random old electronics including a speaker and three cell phones.

The second was across the city limits in Woodinville.

It was left by the same individual who dumped the first mess. We will see if Woodinville has a way to contact someone to pick this up, but the Woodinville part of Woodinville Drive is generally a mess anyway.

Someone got a parking ticket from Diamond Parking.

We are taking bets as to whether Diamond gets paid.

We found an iPhone on the freeway off-ramp.

It’s an iPhone 4s from 2011, so only twelve years old. We plugged it in, but it hasn’t shown any signs of life yet. So, this is kind of a record, we found a total of four cell phones today, but we really can’t count the ones dumped on Woodinville way.

However, this is probably a record.

Two more urine bottles. That makes three in one week, one under the freeway on Riverside Drive and the other on the freeway off-ramp. Wonder what the pH of the contents is now?

The wraps up another TrashWalking week. Our take this week,

  • $1.19 Not bad for a week with no big windfalls.
  • 15 Mikes Hard Lemonade cans.
  • 6 Roadkill including an opossum and three rats.
  • 4 Tools.
  • 3 Urine bottles.
  • 2 Unopened food containers including some very expensive cherries.
  • 1 Ball.
  • 1 Expensive weight.
  • 1 Garmin watch.
  • 1 Flashing collar.
  • 1 Stolen batch of mail.
  • 1 Roadkill glove.

Have a great week and beware of Santas bearing gifts.
